Audemars Piguet has revealed the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, a milestone piece that marks the end of its pioneering Research & Development series. This watch is not only the last in the RD line but also the first-ever “Jumbo” model to combine two major complications in the iconic 39 mm by 8.1 mm profile designed by Gérald Genta.
Crafted in lightweight titanium, the watch features AP’s signature Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 dial with two radial subdials and a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock. The design stays true to the timeless Royal Oak look while pushing the limits of what can be achieved in such a slim case.
At its core is the newly patented Calibre 8100, which brings together a flyback chronograph and a flying tourbillon, along with a rare instant-jump minute counter. To improve ergonomics, AP’s R&D team engineered the chronograph pushers to have a travel of just 0.3 mm and an activation force of only 300 g – levels inspired by smartphone buttons – all while ensuring water resistance and precision.
Innovative features include a function-selector crown replacing the standard pull-out stem, and flat glass-box sapphire crystals hollowed from the inside to maintain the watch’s slim profile without affecting durability, clearance, or winding efficiency.
The RD#5 is a true collector’s piece, limited to only 150 units worldwide and available exclusively at Audemars Piguet boutiques.
