Celebrity jeweler Alex Moss has once again proven that no hype release is safe from getting iced out. Only weeks after the controversial Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” collaboration took over the watch world, the New York-based designer unveiled a fully diamond-encrusted custom version that transforms the playful $400 USD pocket watch into a high-jewelry flex worthy of hip-hop royalty.
Known for crafting extravagant pieces for artists like Drake, Tyler, the Creator, and A$AP Rocky, Alex Moss approached the already polarizing “Royal Pop” as more than just a novelty release. Instead, he saw it as the perfect blank canvas for something loud, luxurious, and culturally disruptive.
Originally launched in May 2026, the AP x Swatch “Royal Pop” shocked collectors by abandoning the traditional wristwatch format entirely. Rather than delivering another standard collaboration piece, Audemars Piguet and Swatch introduced a colorful Pop Art-inspired mechanical pocket watch designed to hang from a chain, clip to bags, or be worn as a statement accessory. While the watch community remained divided over its Bioceramic construction and unconventional design direction, Moss leaned directly into its chaotic energy.
The jeweler and his team completely rebuilt the watch’s exterior presence by engineering a custom 14-karat white gold bezel overlay that fits seamlessly over the original octagonal case. Flooded with VS-clarity diamonds, the bezel dramatically elevates the playful Swatch release into something far more extravagant while still preserving the recognizable Royal Oak-inspired silhouette and exposed screw design.
The transformation perfectly captures the collision between luxury watchmaking, streetwear culture, and modern hip-hop aesthetics. Beneath all the ice remains Swatch’s visible SISTEM51 mechanical movement, creating an unusual blend of accessible Swiss engineering and celebrity-level customization.
What makes the piece even more fascinating is the irony behind it all. The original “Royal Pop” already challenged traditional watch collectors by mixing Audemars Piguet prestige with affordable Swatch experimentation. Alex Moss simply amplified that disruption by taking a mass-market collaboration and treating it like a million-dollar jewelry project.
In many ways, the custom piece feels less like a watch and more like wearable pop culture commentary — flashy, excessive, divisive, and impossible to ignore.
At the time of writing, the one-of-one custom has already been sold, proving once again that hype and diamonds remain an unbeatable combination in luxury culture.
