Few New Balance offerings have come close to the 2002R's "Protection Pack" success. Yet, after nearly a year since its last release, the series — also known as "Refined Future" — is back in four new hues, all of which have received significant enhancements.
The allure of the "Protection Pack" is not diminished by these new items. Every pair is built — or, rather, dismantled — in the same way as their predecessors, with uniquely carved panels along the length of the shoe. These overlays, however, are done up in leather rather than suede, and the mesh under have also been replaced with a more robust, ripstop fabric. Elsewhere, the lace unit has been modified, abandoning traditional strings in favor of a lace toggle system.
