For years, the collaboration between Patta and Nike has been a beacon of reimagined heritage running models. The recent surfacing of pictures hinting at an unconfirmed sample suggests that the duo is set to embark on a new project under the iconic “Nike Air Huarache” banner.
With an affinity for Air Max and a knack for lifestyle makeovers, Amsterdam-based Patta has delved into Tinker Hatfield’s revered Air Huarache silhouette from 1987. However, in recent times, the label has directed attention toward its Patta Running Team, spearheaded by co-founder Edson Sabajo since 2010. Emphasizing camaraderie and enjoyment over race finishes, the team aims to inspire friends and followers to embrace fitness challenges while having fun.
Initial glimpses of the purported Patta-branded shoe bear a striking resemblance to Nike’s Air Huarache Trainer 94, an enduring classic that has seen minimal retro action since its inception. Mesh and neoprene form the foundation of the shoe's construction, with leather panels overlaying the lighter, breathable materials. Lockdown straps adorned in a vibrant pink hue recall the spirit of Hatfield’s '90s Air Huarache designs. Notably, the traditional branding is replaced by a distinctive “By Patta” emblem atop the tongue, featuring a red-colored “X” and a black panther graphic. Retro-inspired heel pull tabs contrast the modernized midsole and outsole, borrowed directly from Nike’s Pegasus 40 running shoe, a popular daily trainer that has seen numerous iterations over the past year.
Curiously, the choice of older tooling from the Pegasus 40 raises questions, especially considering the impending release of Nike’s Pegasus 41, rumored to bring visual and technological updates to the running line. If the sample is authentic, it might suggest a project originally slated for 2023 that didn’t come to fruition.
While details remain speculative, in-hand photography of the sneaker sample sparks anticipation among sneaker enthusiasts. If this shoe, or a similar iteration, sees the light of day, it is likely to make its debut on the Nike SNKRS app by Summer 2024.
